Inspired by our Bishops and Bloggers, I’m Back!

by Scott on November 12, 2012

Today I realized that it was August 2010 since I last posted here. Now here we are in 2012, a month into the Year of Faith and I believe it’s time to get back to it. I’ve been thinking a lot today about what I might be able to contribute to the conversation.

While I’m still not sure where this renewed effort will take me, it’s sure to include some combination of sharing my personal faith journey as an aspirant to the permanent diaconate and using technology & social media within the Church. Beyond that, I’m not really sure. Let’s just say it’s a work in progress.

The plan as of now is to publish a few short posts weekly. I hope I can add something of value to the amazing conversation that’s already underway in the Catholic blogosphere. I suspect that much of what I write about will be to point you to others who are much more accomplished at this craft than I’ll ever be.

Today’s inspiration came from the Bishops’ meeting in Baltimore where they began the day in dialog with a select group of Catholic bloggers and exchanged ideas for evangelizing using social media. Tweets have been streaming out of the meeting and they are very positive and hopeful. According to Father Z, Cardinal Dolan “knocked it out of the park” in his President’s address. He published an audio recording of the message on his blog.

His Eminance’s emphasis on the Sacrament of Penance rang true for me and I was thrilled to hear Cardinal Dolan take the position that it’s foundational to the New Evangelization. In another nod to the value of social media, you’ll also find live streaming of the meeting by seasoned church analyst Rocco Palmo on his highly popular blog, Whispers in the Loggia.

I think this is going to be fun and I hope you’ll be back for more.

Scott,

So glad to see you back to posting. I was in attendance at the bloggers conference with the USCCB on Sunday and I have to say that I, too, was inspired by the meeting. The fact that bishops are even talking about social media and blogging should get every Catholic considering to use those platforms to share their own stories. We all have to get out in cyberspace and share how the Church and our faith have impacted our own lives in order to do our part in the New Evangelization. Glad to see you back!

Thanks so much, Tom. I appreciate your kind words and hope that others will also decide to jump in with their own initiatives. The harvest is great and the laborers are few. The Holy Spirit is clearly moving through both our Bishops and our bloggers.
